No Place Like Home

Despite popular belief, many engaged couples find an outdoor home ceremony to be a less-stressful alternative to the traditional church wedding. Although the space may not be extravagant or exotic, it does provide a comfortable and familiar setting along with a savings in time, money, and reception hall expenses.

However, this does not imply that planning a wedding at home is by any means easier. Rather a certain amount of detail work is required.

A Size Issue: While downsizing does have its advantages in terms of cost, it also has its shortcomings.
First thing to determine when considering a home wedding is how many people can fit comfortably within the space and what kind of seating will be required. Family members, friends, a band/DJ –these are all components that a planning bride and groom should be concerned with.

Secondly, comparative research into local banquet and party vendors will give insight into reception costs based on the amount of supplies –such as linen, tables, chairs, banquet setting, etc. –needed to accommodate each guest.

And finally, once the number of guests and seating arrangements has been decided upon, a floral design is needed. As a way of further familiarizing one’s self with the area, a sketch of the layout is then recommended. Using it as a key, the florist can work with the desired set-up to decorate the site with fresh flowers.

Weather: When considering an outdoor wedding and/or reception, additional preparations for sudden changes in weather could prove useful. For example, a small tent or canopy should it rain.

Legal Limitations: Although they may not be invited to the event, neighbors do appreciate being thought of among the many wedding details. Since no reception is complete without music and dancing, showing respect for local laws of noise restriction is advised. Also, be sure to notify people within your area that a wedding will be taking place and that there may be more noise and activity than normal. In return, some neighbors may even be willing to lend additional space for parking.

Service Provider: Whether married by civil servant or religious official, it is essential to see if they are available to perform the ceremony at your home. Occasionally, a special fee may be required.

Creating a beautiful home wedding can be a challenge; but it is one that allows for much more intimate creativity and expression than the average designer ceremony.
