Think Green! : Tips for an Eco-Chic Wedding

Eco-chic is considered to be one of the fastest growing wedding trends among couples to date. But this does not mean that brides must compromise elegance for organic.

Nature’s Way: When considering your venue options, know that state parks and natural preserves offer not only a natural elegance to the event but also a less than strenuous addition to your pocketbook. However, if none are found to be appealing, a second option would be to research locations that contribute proceeds to support eco-friendly causes.

Natural Light: To cut down on electricity, consider celebrating your wedding outside with a sunlit backdrop. However, if you are set upon having an evening celebration, consider burning soy candles. They not only last longer than traditional candles, but they also contribute to the romance of the scenery. But should candles fall short, LED lighting is just as eco-friendly.

Waste Not: Minimize paper waste by use of recyclable invitations and/or email for event information updates. However, if you are looking for something with a more personal or creative touch, a customized website is also a wonderful option.

Recycle a Ring: Pledge your commitment to the earth and each other by choosing a ring made with environmentally-conscious precious metals, such as recycled gold and platinum; or eco-friendly, handcrafted wooden rings. Vendors who offer such exclusive craftsmanship include:

Recycle a Dress: Turn something old into something new, whether it be your mother’s wedding dress, or an overlooked vintage shop treasure. However, if retro is not your style, consider a dress made of a natural fiber, such as hemp-satin; or find a simple white dress that can later be altered, accessorized, and worn again.

Retire the Rice: Despite the throwing of rice to be a quaint wedding tradition, what is left over can, in fact, be hazardous to birds; and throwing exotic birdseed, especially in a state park or the like, can offset the natural habitat. Instead, consider having your guests toss native wildflower seeds or flower petals, or blow bubbles.

An All-Natural Honeymoon: When choosing a honeymoon destination, consider an eco-resort that both protects and preserves the environment. Two such options being the Lapa Rios Ecolodge in Costa Rica, and the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa in California.

These simple touches can not only add a unique beauty to your special event, but they will also ease even the most eco-concious.
